Propecia (Finasteride) Review

If you are serious about stopping hair loss and recovering your hair, then there is no way around Propecia. You have a 83% chance of keeping all the hair you currently have. 2 out of 3 men on Propecia regrew hair. No other drug has better statistics.

Propecia is one of the two FDA approved drugs. The other one is Minoxidil (Rogaine). This means that the results are widely tested and approved and there is scientific evidence that Propecia works. How Propecia works

If you stop taking Propecia, your results will gradually go away over 12 months. And if Propecia hasn’t worked in 12 months, further treatment is unlikely to be of benefit.

Propecia Side Effects
There are almost no side effects. In clinical studies, a small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, or a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men and went away in men who stopped taking Propecia because of them.

Does Propecia work?
A 5-year clinical study demonstrated the effectiveness of Propecia:

 9 out of 10 men on Propecia had visible results (either regrowth of hair, 48% [134 out of 279], or no further hair loss, 42% [117 out of 279]) vs.. 25% (4 out of 16) on placebo (sugar pill), according to an assessment of photographs by an independent panel of dermatologists.

 2 out of 3 men on Propecia regrew hair, as measured by hair count. All the men in the study who were not taking Propecia lost hair.

 A majority of men on Propecia were rated as improved by doctors: 77% (210 out of 271) vs. 15% (2 out of 13) with placebo.

 A majority of men on Propecia reported their bald spot getting smaller, their hair loss slowing down, and the appearance of their hair improving.

What’s more, in the first year of the study, 86% (587 out of 679) of men on Propecia maintained hair or increased the number of visible hairs vs. 42% (282 out of 672) on placebo.

What is in Propecia
Propecia contains 1mg of Finasteride, a systemic DHT inhibitor which has been used for over 20 years at five times the dosage (in the form of Proscar) to help treat men with Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH).

Propecia Alternatives
There is no real alternative. Currently there are only two FDA approved hair treatments on the market: Propecia (which contains finasteride) and Rogaine (which contains minoxidil). Propecia can stop hair loss and helping maintaining the hair you have. The main benefit of Rogaine is its ability to stimulate hair growth - it does not tackle the causes of hair loss like Propecia. Generic Propecia
Generic Propecia is cheaper but it is not the original Propecia produced by Merck. It contains the same ingredient though, Finasteride. So if you take 1mg of Finasteride then you should have the same effects theoretically, however, but sometimes that's not the case. The problem is that generic drugs didn't go through the same strong testing by the FDA like the original product. The generic drug producer also doesn't have to disclose any results of any tests he made. There also could be unknown side effects. Since you have to take Propecia for at least 3 to 6 months our recommendation therefore is to stay with the original Propecia from Merck to be sure you get the proven results. Otherwise you may spend a lot of money for probably less effective or even worthless generic drugs.

My Recommendation
Many men use Propecia in combination with Rogaine and Retin-A for maximum results. While Propecia stops hair loss, Rogaine has proven to be very effective in regrowing hair. Retin-A itself has been found to be more effective in combination with Rogaine to stimulate hair growth. However, please consult your doctor before you order Propecia.
