Rogaine (Minoxidil) Review

My Rating & Recommendation:
If you are serious about hair regrowth then there is no way around Rogaine. It's is the only FDA approved hair growth solution beside Propecia and can be used without prescription. While Rogaine regrowths your hair, it is not a treatment against hair loss like Propecia. Propecia stops hair loss. Rogaine grows hair. Many men therefore use Propecia and Rogaine in combination for best results. Men should use the stronger and more effective 5% solution while women should use the standard 2% solution.

How it works
Rogaine contains the ingredient Minoxidil which works in your scalp to enlarge your hair follicles and stimulate hair regrowth. It helps your hair to become larger and thicker again.

Rogaine for men works as well as for women and is available in a 2% and the stronger 5% liquid solution (for men only). Men's Rogaine Extra Strength is around since 1997 and grows 45% more hair than the regular 2% formula.  It also starts growing hair sooner.

Rogaine Side Effects
A small percentage of users (less than 6%) experience scalp irritation. Just wash out Rogaine and use less. It also helps to use a mild shampoo.

How is Rogaine used?
Rogaine is a liquid which is applied twice a day to your scalp. It is not for use with frontal baldness or receding hairline. You can use Rogaine together with your hair spray, styling aids or hair coloration. After applying Rogaine wait for it to dry completely (4 hours) before you do anything else with your hair.

To optimize results you can use Rogaine in combination with Propecia and/or Retin-A. Propecia stops hair loss more effectively than Rogaine while Rogaine is better for hair regrowth. Rogaine together with Retin-A is also an option which has shown to be effective. However, do not mix Rogaine with Retin-A you bought separately, it does not work. Retin-A was first approved by the FDA for treatment of skin conditions such as acne but then it was also found to be helpful against hair loss and for hair growth stimulation.

Is Rogaine safe?
Rogaine is FDA approved what means usage has been proved to be safe and secure in comprehensive clinical studies. It is available since 1988 and used by millions of people since then. The most common side effect reported by less than 6% of users is itching of the scalp which can be avoided by using less Rogaine or simply washing it out.

Does Rogaine Work?
Rogaine regrowths hair in about 59% of men after 4 months of usage. 26% reported moderate to dense regrowth, 33% experienced minimal regrowth.

Rogaine Alternatives
There is no real alternative. Currently there are only two FDA approved hair treatments on the market: Propecia (which contains finasteride) and Rogaine (which contains minoxidil). Propecia can stop hair loss and help maintaining the hair you have. The main benefit of Rogaine is its ability to stimulate hair growth - it does not tackle the causes of hair loss like Propecia. Many men therefore use Rogaine in combination with Propecia.

Generic Rogaine
Generic Rogaine is cheaper but it is not the original Rogaine produced by Pfizer. It contains the same ingredient though, Minoxidil. So if you use Minoxidil then you should have the same effects theoretically, however, but sometimes that's not the case. The problem is that generic drugs didn't go through the same strong testing by the FDA like the original product. The generic drug producer also doesn't have to disclose any results of any tests he made. There also could be unknown side effects. Since you have to take Rogaine for at least 3 to 6 months our recommendation therefore is to stay with the original product from Pfizer to be sure you get the proven results. Otherwise you may spend a lot of money for probably less effective or even worthless generic drugs.

My Recommendation
We recommend using Rogaine in combination with Retin-A and Propecia for maximum results. Usage of a mild shampoo can help to lower risks of Rogain side effects and make hair healthier. However, please consult your doctor before you order.
